I look in the mirror. I’m not pretty.
I think of my friends. I’m mean.
I remember the past. It hurts.
I know the truth. I can’t believe it.
Tears sting my eyes. I don’t think I can do this anymore. My heart aches.
A face appears in the mirror next to mine. Iram. I meet his gaze in the mirror.
Iram stretches his arm out towards me. “Eve,” I flinch at the sound of the name. I’m Fereveren. My name is Fereveren. “You have to accept this. You’re still in danger.”
I close my eyes. Can I just dream this all away?
“Eve, I forgive you.” He is pleading with me. “You don’t have to be like this anymore. You can be safe. You aren’t Fereveren anymore. You’re Eve.”
His words sound so comforting. So true. But I will never be safe. He should know that by now. I can’t be anything.
“Eve-”
I cut him off. “Iram, stop.” I turn to him for the first time. “You’re lying.” I try to continue, but the look in his eyes stops me. It’s like I slapped him in the face.
“Don’t you see? You’re tricking yourself.” He is whispering now. “You are in danger of yourself.”
It feels like my heart froze. I open my eyes wide. Tricking myself. No. No. I think. I’m not pretty. I’m not...I’m not...but my heart whispers something new. Yes you are...yes you are… I am Eve.
I look into the mirror again. Iram stands behind me, his hands on my shoulders. Tears run down my cheeks, and I whisper “Thank you.”
